I am missing R&D's cocktails so much!!! Franchie's mezcal negroni, Dale's oolong-tini, Tea-tinies, espresso-Tunis!! I miss you guys in SF!! I'm at an awesome historic restaurant, Big 4 savoring classic negroni and espresso martini complimented with chicken liver mousse and live piano music!! I wish I have Frenchie's mezcal negroni and Dale's espresso martini/tea-tinies here!! (Dale, I wish I brought back 3 bottles of your oolong liquor. It was sooo good!!)
Spencer, any new tattoos?
I've been here twice and each time was great.
First time was a low-key dinner and drink with a friend. We had a couple of the food items, the Taco and the Quesadilla(?), both were excellent. Both were also reasonably priced. Our drinks were also really great. Ordering is done based on giving the waiter/waitress some taste preferences and working around that. One great thing about this place is that their is a clear commitment to having a unique and "local" vibe. By that I mostly mean using cool local ingredients to give you a unique experience/drink you wont get outside of Taiwan. More on that later. Service this time was excellent and the waitress was very helpful.
The second time was also great. This was more of a boozing session with a couple friends. It was quite busy but I was really impressed with how the wait staff made sure to talk to all of us and try their best to get us all situated. We first took some standing places near the bar, then after some spots opened up at the bar we had seats. I feel at many other places dealing with a rush of customers you would be told to leave or treated in a cold manner, but from entering to exiting this place you feel like family. The service really is excellent. An example of this was my first drink of this night. I ordered Gaoliang based drinks because I'm a complete idiot and hate my body, anyways, I ended up not getting the exact drink I ordered but rather another Gaoliang based drink. Normally I don't make a fuss about a mix up, especially when, to be honest, both drinks were great, but the Head Bartender came over himself and apologized for the mix up, comped the first drink, and got me the second one as well. Then he treated my group and me to a round of shots (they do their own mixes). Super professional and very appreciated.
After we sat down at the bar the good vibes continued and the strength of the drinks (or at least mine) showed quick. I ordered a very unique Chinese Medicine Gaoliang type drink to finish my night which was a hit. It seems like they're always experimenting and trying to make new and interesting concoctions and that's awesome, I definitely applaud the staff for trying to go in a unique direction.
To sum up an overly long review. Great service, super professional, drinks were all delicious, drinks were all plenty strong, great place, immense experience. If you want a really great and unpretentious bar serving great cocktails, come here, you will not be disappointed.
又非常好又独特的一个酒吧!Fantastic, bespoke and sleek cocktails without any fuss or futile garnish, but with pure, unique and local as well as seasonal ingredients. Great food: the Hawaian Poke Donburi was to die for. The Taiwanese and Western specialities are utterly luscious! The atmosphere is high-end, yet low-key without any pretence or pretention. The staff was approachable, amenable, efficient, international and all able to speak Chinese/English. The adornment has lately been revamped and looks superb as well as genuine: a perfect mix between West and Far-East. Excellent and free WiFi too! If you come with a taxi, be careful to drive down the right street, indeed Jia Xing street (嘉兴街) is narrow and has lately been renamed. Some drivers may get easily misled. The facade and the entrance are sleek and discreet. Watch out on the right-hand side (if coming by car) for a grey wall, with their logo on it, and a door next to it. This venue is as appreciated by Westerners as it is by locals too.
